Sustainability in Cannabis: What Steps Can the Industry Take?

February 15th, 2023 | 12:00 PM CT

The carbon footprint of cannabis cultivation is well-known to the industry but may surprise the average cannabis consumer.

In this on-demand Rootwurks webinar, you can hear two experts discuss how cannabis companies can reduce their environmental impact and why sustainable solutions are a must for the future of the cannabis industry.

About this Webinar

Legal retail cannabis is now a reality in states across the country and has become America’s sixth biggest cash crop. But at what cost?

Cannabis cultivation requires high energy use, as much as 10% of industrial electricity consumption in Massachusetts, according to one estimate. The Northwest Power and Conservation Council has stated that indoor cannabis production can consume 2,000 to 3,000 kilowatt hours of energy per pound of product. And according to a March 2021 report, growing one ounce of cannabis indoors produces from 143 to 324 pounds of carbon dioxide, depending on the state.

But these figures don’t take into account the water use of the industry and the environmental impact of contaminants from pesticides and salt-based nutrients in the water supply, as well as all that non-renewable packaging that gets discarded not long after the average consumer gets home from the dispensary.

In this on-demand Rootwurks webinar, Melinda Kadinger of Smokey’s Cannabis Co and Justin Miller of High Life Solar will discuss the steps their companies have taken to improve sustainability in cannabis - and how the rest of the industry can follow suit.
